COMPASS Action Teams Hold Second Meeting Series to Implement New Countywide Comprehensive Plan

Cincinnati - COMPASS Action Teams Building on Ideas. COMPASS Action Teams were developed at the Community COMPASS’ Countywide Town Meeting, where almost 500 participants registered to be on a CAT to implement the vision created at the Jan. 12 meeting. Made up of volunteers and area-specific experts, the teams will meet at various times through May to discuss the vision, its objectives and implementation strategies.

The COMPASS Action Teams (CATs) are following a four meeting process.  According to Steve Johns, Senior Planner with the Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission, “This process allows citizens to methodically work through the strategic planning process.  Strategies are developed that build on our assets and remove barriers to implement the core goals and vision for the County. These strategies are also evolving from existing plans and ideas gathered from citizen participation at the Community Forums and the Countywide Town Meeting.”

Barriers and Assets:

CAT Team 1: Assuring Economic Prosperity
  Vibrant County and Vibrant City
Sample Barrier: No national image – we need to promote the good things we have.
Sample Assets: We have tremendous assets – major league sports, theaters, symphony, opera, ballet, Art Museum.
  Sub-Team : Competitive County
Sample Barrier: Need to identify and select technologies of the future.  We must reconcile our future focus with immediate community job needs, and needs of businesses coming to our region.
Sample Assets: Universities – we have many, but they may not be collaborating like those in other cities.  Location, infrastructure.
Sub-Team :  Outstanding Workforce, Exceptional Education
Sample Barrier: Limited funding for schools and limited levels for taxing.
    Sample Assets: School/Community partnerships.

CAT TEAM 2: Balancing Development and the Environment
Sample Barrier: Lack of coordination of efforts
Sample Assets: Livability of older areas, hills and rivers

CAT TEAM 3: Embracing Diversity and Equity
Participants identified the religious community in Hamilton County as a significant asset that strategies should use to help implement the goal.

CAT TEAM 4: Balancing Collaborative Decision-making
Sample Barrier: Underlying pride in the community.
Sample Asset: Few venues for different groups to come together to make decisions.
